Foundation Creed

Memorial Foundation Purpose

Established in 1989, our foundation seeks to remember and spread the resounding message of patriotism and human respect of Dr. Chyung Yil-hyung, who devoted his entire life to realizing democracy as an independence activist, and his wife, Dr. Lee Tai-young, who strived to defend disadvantaged groups and create an equal society.

We will not forget their passion, trials, and justice based on their trust and integrity in each other that worked to make a righteous country, even in the midst of the turbulent modern history of Korea. We will help make a world in which every citizen can be happy so that their efforts will not be wasted.

Welcome to the Memorial Foundation

This foundation was established to honor and carry forward the noble lives and legacies of the late Dr. Chyung Yil-hyung, who devoted his entire life to the independence movement for Korea’s liberation and to the realization of liberal democracy and unification, and the late Dr. Lee Tai-young, who dedicated her life to improving the lives of disadvantaged women in this country.

Our mission is to pass on to future generations the invaluable experiences and assets of Dr. Chyung and Dr. Lee, filled with their passion, challenge, and sense of justice. To illuminate our future, we must understand the past accurately and draw lessons from history.

With a commitment to new challenges for the future, we aim to contribute to the advancement of democracy in all areas of society, the improvement of women’s status in Korea, and the cultivation of pride and passionate dedication in line with the ideals of Dr. Chyung and Dr. Lee.

The foundation carries out programs to preserve their spirit for future generations, including scholarships for underprivileged youth, initiatives supporting the democratization and human rights movements, and talent development. Through these activities, we strive to bring positive hope and change to society.

Your interest and support will be transparently reflected in the promotion of democracy, talent cultivation, and social development in Korea. We hope you will walk with us on this path toward a grand future, and we wish success to all who carry beautiful dreams.

Program Overview

Overview

Operation of
the memorial hall

By exhibiting the house where they lived, located in Seodaemungu, Seoul, and their possessions (furniture, paintings and calligraphic works, stamps, artwork, etc.), future generations are able to view the paths taken by Dr. Chyung Yil-hyung and Dr. Lee Tai-young.

Memorial Service

Memorial ceremonies are held in April and December to honor the spirits and footsteps of Dr. Chyung Yil-hyung and Dr. Lee Tai-young.

Scholarship Project

Scholarships are awarded to youths, for them to continue the purpose of both Dr. Chyung Yil-hyung and Dr. Lee Tai-young, and become a contributing member of the Korean society. (The award has been givento approximately 3,000 students as of its establishment in 2021.)

"Freedom Democracy" Award

To identify and encourage the outstanding talents of Korea, this award is presented in the divisions of democratic and reunification field and the social service field. The award ceremony is held annually on April 23 to commemorate the date of Dr. Chyung Yil-hyung’s passing.

Highlighting the paths built by Dr. Chyung Yil-hyung and Dr. Lee Taiyoung for Korea’s succession of democracy and improvement of human rights, lectures and roundtables are held with people from all walks of life.

Publication and dissemination of texts

The biographies and various research studies published during the lifetimes of Dr. Chyung Yil-hyung and Dr. Lee Tai-young will be educated to future generations, and such publications are distributed through various means such as textbooks.

Online and offline contents including movies, broadcasts, animations, and characters are produced and supplied to promote and inherit the spirit of Dr. Chyung Yil-hyung and Dr. Lee Tai-young.
